My Medicare

What is MyMedicare?

MyMedicare allows patients to formally register with their preferred general practice and GP. This registration helps support more personalized and continuous care, especially for those who have regular interactions with the healthcare system.

Key Features:

  • Voluntary Registration: Patients choose to sign up — it’s not mandatory.
  • Better Continuity of Care: Encourages stronger, ongoing relationships with a regular GP.
  • Tailored Support for Complex Needs: Particularly beneficial for people with chronic conditions, older Australians, or those needing coordinated care.
  • Eligibility for New Medicare Benefits: Some new funding and services will only be available to patients registered in MyMedicare.
  • Applies to Eligible Practices and GPs: Only participating practices and GPs can be selected in the registration process.

Who Can Register?

  • People with a valid Medicare or DVA (Department of Veterans’ Affairs) card.
  • Patients who have had at least two face-to-face visits with the practice in the last 24 months (some exceptions apply).

How to Register:

  • Online via MyGov (linked to Medicare).
  • Through your GP practice (they can initiate registration).
  • Using the Medicare Express Plus App.

Why It Matters:

MyMedicare supports a shift toward team-based, patient-centered care, with better access to services, especially for those with long-term health needs. It also helps the government improve health funding and planning by better understanding where and how people get their care.
